KCPW, the Utah Nonprofits Association, and Utah Public Radio are partnering to spotlight the positive impacts of local nonprofit organizations.
“Utah Cares” features a series of stories from diversified nonprofits in an effort to increase the visibility of nonprofits across the state, and to inspire people to give to organizations and community groups that are essential to the health and well-being of Utah.The program is sponsored by Lewiston State Bank.
KCPW will air “Utah Cares” through June 24. You can hear it at 8:20 during Morning Edition, at 11:30 during World Have Your Say, at 1:30 during Fresh Air, and at 5:20 during All Things Considered.

The Four Corners School of Outdoor Education creates outdoor learning experiences for participants of all ages in the beautiful bioregion of the Colorado Plateau. Janet Ross is the program’s founder and Executive Director.
“Providing Safe,Alcohol and Drug-free Residential Group Homes for Recovering Addicts and Alcoholics”
Project Recovery provides recovering addicts and alcoholics with supportive transitional housing as they commit to changing their lives. Tara Patterson credits the organization with giving her the help and hope she needed to reclaim a life of sobriety.
“Partnering with Doctors to Prescribe Books”
Dr. Wendy Hobson-Rohrer’s medical practice specializes in early intervention and the care of underserved children. Since 1998, she has been instrumental in bringing Read out and Read to 37 clinical sites in Utah, helping doctors prescribe books to their patients.
The Human Rights Education Center of Utah
“Equity, Empathy and Emancipation”
The Human Rights Education Center of Utah provides bullying and diversity education for Utahns of all ages and backgrounds. Gabby Huggins, a student at West High School, appreciates how HREC teaches youth about tolerance.
“Parents Helping Parents of Children with Disabilities”
Robyn Chidesterwas introduced to the Utah Parent Center in 1989, when her family relocated to Utah from Oregon. Robyn’s 25-year-old son, Matthew, has Down’s Syndrome.
“Expanding Access to Post-Secondary Educational Opportunities by Providing a Means for Individuals to Learn Independent of Time and Place”
Western Governors University opens doors for higher education to thousands of adult learners in all 50 states. Taking online classes from her home in the Uinta Basin, Carrie Mairwill graduate in July with a master’sdegree in education.
