The Flavakids Crew at the School of Dance is a kid’s group of advanced Breakers. These Bboys and BGirls train in the art of breaking or breakdancing as some people call it. Breaking is one of the four main elements of Hip Hop along with the DJ, the MC, and the Graffiti Artist. The Flavakids Crew will be sharing what Breaking is and how it is alive today in our Utah community!

At STEM labs, we use scientific principles in creative new ways, and our special guest scientist Beth Drees will explain not just HOW to make slime, but WHY the whole thing works! Using this new chemical knowledge, kids are encouraged to create test batches of slime to explore their favorite textures by experimenting with different combinations of ingredients until they find the perfect recipe. Once their slime is just right, we’ll use ratios to create a mega-batch, add their favorite custom mix-ins, and package individual portions to hand out as special DIY valentine gifts for the whole class. Even grown ups will have fun engineering fascinating new goops with their kids, and at the end, everyone will walk away feeling like a chemical engineer.

This workshop will be held at the STEM Action Center’s Innovation Hub in Millcreek, where you can have all the fun of slime and leave the mess behind!

Please note: a parent or guardian must be in attendance with their child/children. The $29 ticket allows entry for one child and one parent. An additional $10 for entry of another child with that ticket.

Youth Art Workshop Celebrating Basquiat
In honor of Black History month we celebrate the historical figures, ancestors and legendary creators of our joined history.

Of the greats in art you cannot forget the iconic crowns of Jean Michel Basquait, the self portraits and the colors that charge your mind with wonder. In this family workshop we ask you to think who in your life needs to be reminded of their crown? All of us!

So in this workshop you will work as a family to create a scene of crowns for each family member.

Take your family portrait on site, print it out and create those images using the language of Basquait. Is your dad your superhero? Is your dog your favorite creature? How can you incorporate the artistic expressions of Basquait in your family portrait? Decide together who and what you want to honor and create.

When you’re all done look at how you’ve come together to create a piece expressing what unity and creativity can produce.

Britt Wray is a Human and Planetary Health Postdoctoral Fellow at the Stanford Center for Innovation in Global Health, Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment and London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. Her research focuses on the mental health impacts of climate change on young people and frontline community members. Dr. Wray has a PhD in Science Communication from the University of Copenhagen and is a journalist, speaker, and author of two books: Generation Dread: Finding Purpose in the Climate Crisis and Rise of the Necrofauna: The Science, Ethics and Risks of De-Extinction.

Launched in Fall 2020, the Author Meets Readers series connects humanities scholars or writers and their research with lifelong readers and learners. Individual sessions run for one hour, are facilitated by the Tanner Humanities Center Director or campus and community experts, and feature insights into the research and writing process, the impact of humanities scholarship on culture and society, and an audience discussion.

South Valley Creative Dance strives to nurture the child as an artist using creative movement and modern dance-based training to encourage each student to relate, reflect, and respond to the world around them. Students ranging from 5th grade through high school will present a beautiful show exploring elements of history through dance and movement. Additionally, audience members will be invited to participate both on stage and from their seats to create a wiggle-friendly environment for all ages.

Join Jane Clapp for a 4-hour learning experience to be introduced to the 6-pillars of Jungian Somatics: a foundational overview of this emergent and potent body of work that explores the inseparable relationship between somatics and Jungian psychology.

Be introduced to the anatomy of the psyche and how it is mirrored in the body. Experience practices that Jane has evolved from 20 years of working with movement therapy and somatics, and training in Jungian psychology.

The Six Pillars:
1. The process of embodied active imagination to explore unconscious material via the body through intuitive movement and symbolic image creation.
2. Principles of archetypal somatics and trauma as an embodied spiritual injury.
3. The neurobiology of spirituality and the embodiment of the Self.
4. The neurobiology of creativity and the unconscious psyche.
5. Somatics of transference and countertransference and the shared field via the unconscious psyche.
6. Introduction to the somatics of dream interpretation.

About Jane Clapp:
Jane is a psychotherapist, an advanced candidate with the Ontario Association of Jungian Analysts, and an expert in the intersection of the body and psyche. For over twenty years, Jane has been a movement and somatic coach and embodiment educator working with a diverse clientele all over the world. Bringing together many years of somatic study and clinical experience, along with extensive personal Jungian analysis and professional training as an analyst, Jane developed Jungian Somatics™.

A baby Yeti is lost in the mountains! Please join us for this fun tale of rescue, good friends, spirit horses and a trip through Mongolia. Puppets in the City is so excited to share this puppet show with you. After the show, you can be part of a “meet-and-greet” with the puppets.

At STEM labs, we use scientific principles in creative new ways, and this workshop will give you science-backed skills for working through mental health challenges and documenting your journey. We’ll begin the workshop by customizing personal journals with collage materials, offering a simple way to visualize your thoughts and moods. Then, Claire Adams of the Community Writing Center will offer an overview of what mental health journaling can do for you, guiding you through several prompts that will help you get started on your path to wellbeing.

This workshop is also a fundraiser, and 10% of ticket sales will be donated to the Behavioral Health Innovation & Dissemination Center at the University of Utah, where new breakthroughs in mental health treatment are always being studied. We’ll hold this workshop at the University of Utah’s NEXUS Facility, and detailed instructions on parking and location will be sent two days prior to the event to help you get there.

University of Utah Children’s Dance Theatre presents “Salt”
The Children’s Dance Theatre invites you to come experience a magical adventure for all ages, based on a whimsical folk tale. Three brothers set out to seek their fortunes in a world full of fierce trolls and hungry giants. Ashlad, the youngest brother, is ridiculed and thought of as foolish because he asks so many questions. But Ashlad’s curiosity and kindness seem to bring him remarkable luck wherever he goes. Ultimately, Ashlad proves himself not so foolish after all, and brings home the unlikeliest of treasures, more precious than gold.
