(KCPW News) Salt Lake City Police are still looking for answers after two suspicious bags were left in front on the Matheson Courthouse yesterday afternoon, forcing officers to divert traffic and evacuate the courthouse for several hours. Police Detective Cary Wichmann says a concerned citizen helped draw attention to the situation.
“A female who was entering the courthouse had advised one of the court security officers that a white van had just stopped in front of the courthouse and dropped off two large backpacks,” he told KCPW. “There was a brief verbal exchange between the two, and then the van drove off.”
By the time the bomb squad detonated the two suspicious bags, however, Wichmann says officers could no longer find their only witness.
“We would really like to find that witness to be able to talk to her to be able to get a little bit more of the suspect’s information, because at this point all we really have is that it was a white van and the bags were dropped off,” he says.
The bomb scare shut down State Street between 400 and 500 South for more than two hours.
