(KCPW News) Pickle jars, beer bottles and other glass products will soon be recyclable in Salt Lake City. Beginning in October, the city is partnering with Momentum Recycling to offer curbside glass recycling pickup for residents who choose to participate. Salt Lake City Recycling Program Manager Debbie Lyons says the cost will be six dollars a month, included in residents’ water bills.

“It’s an optional program so if a resident wants to have a convenient collection from their curb they can sign up if you don’t want it you don’t have to opt in,” said Lyons.  “We will be providing drop off centers for people who would prefer to use a drop-off option.”

Lyons says plans for the service have been in the works for over a year. It was initiated due to high demand.

“We have had a lot of interest in glass recycling ever since our city began recycling and glass has been a topic that has always addressed,” said Lyons  “So, this is something we’ve heard from our residents that they want it to be convenient, they want to be able to recycle glass easily so, we looked as this curb side option when we were looking at all of our options last fall.”

The service will begin in the neighborhoods where demand is the greatest based on sign-ups before moving on to the entire city. Residents can sign up at www.slcgreen.com.
