Winder Supporter Files Complaint Against Crockett Campaign

A supporter of West Valley City Mayor Mike Winder’s campaign for Salt Lake County Mayor is fighting fire with fire, after Winder’s campaign was slapped with a complaint last week accusing him of campaign finance and ethics violations.

(KCPW News) A supporter of West Valley City Mayor Mike Winder’s campaign for Salt Lake County Mayor is fighting fire with fire, after Winder’s campaign was slapped with a complaint last week accusing him of campaign finance and ethics violations. Winder supporter Brent Overson has filed a complaint against his GOP rival, Mark Crockett, saying he’s not providing enough information on financial-disclosure forms. But Crockett says the new complaint doesn’t suggest that he broke any rules.

“It asks us to be more transparent, but the rules require that we list out the receipts and expenditures from the campaign and that’s exactly what we did,” Crocket says. “We’re happy to provide any additional detail that people would want, but the complaint didn’t allege that we did anything wrong and we’re not aware that we have done anything.”

Overson, a former county commissioner, told the Salt Lake Tribune he filed the complaint in retribution.

Crockett says the bickering is unfortunate, because it’s an important race and there are important issues to talk about.

“How are we going to get the community involved in making decisions about our future?” He says. “How do we improve our human services? That’s really the issue. And I trust that the DA and the county clerk are going to do whatever the right thing is to do about the complaint against Winder’s finances, and I’m just going to move on.”

The candidates each have 14 days to respond to the complaints. Both campaigns said they planned to file a response today. Overson did not return a request for comment by KCPW.
