(KCPW News) Despite having the support of Mayor Ralph Becker and the chair of the Salt Lake City Council, a proposed ballot initiative calling for an end to corporate personhood in Salt Lake City has hit a snag, even though organizers gathered and submitted the required number of signatures.
The city attorney has written an opinion that the Move to Amend petition doesn’t meet the requirements of state law, because it makes a statement instead of creating legislation.
That doesn’t mean it definitely won’t go on the ballot, however. The Salt Lake City Council may get around the problem by passing an ordinance that would still place the initiative on the ballot this fall.
The Move to Amend initiative declares that only human beings have constitutional rights, and that money is not speech, therefore regulating political contributions is not the same as limiting political speech.
