Utah Gubernatorial Candidate Speaks Out Against Proposed Takeover of Fort Douglas for Olympic Bid

Later this summer, Utah will decide whether to pursue hosting the Olympic Winter Games for a second time. A key supporter of that bid is the University of Utah, especially if the school can gain access to neighboring Fort Douglas for Olympic venues. But as KCPW’s Jessica Gail reports, Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Peter Cooke says now is not the time to lose military land.

University of Utah Scientists Tasked With Helping U.S. Army

The U.S Army is looking to improve some of its materials and is asking scientists at the University of Utah to help. The U. was chosen to lead a handful of other universities through a five-year project that could bring about more energy efficient devices and batteries. Deseret Chemical Depot Celebrates 70 Years of Work

U.S. Army officials recognized the work of employees at the Deseret Chemical Depot weapons storage facility in Tooele Thursday for their part in destroying the largest stockpile of chemical weapons in the United States. Expert on Afghanistan War, Insurgency Speaks in Salt Lake

The alleged killing of 16 Afghan civilians by an American soldier has raised serious questions about the future of U.S.forces in Afghanistan. U.S. Army Colonel Robert Cassidy, a professor at the U.S. Naval War College, most recently served in Afghanistanas special assistant to the operational commander from 2010 to 2011. Now, he’s in Utahto speak to the Salt Lake Committee on Foreign Relations this evening.

“Bomb Iran” Billboard Aimed at Provocatively Getting Out Anti-War Message

Senate Approves Miltary Property Tax Exemption

The Utah Senate approved a bill this morning to exempt military personnel from paying state property taxes. Senate Bill 116, sponsored by Democratic Senator Luz Robles, would apply to a service member who has been called to active duty. Robles said men and women serving probably weren’t expecting the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to go on so long, and they’re suffering.

World War II Veterans Honored by State Legislature

The Utah House of Representatives honored some special World War II Veterans on Monday. Nearly a dozen members of the 100th Infantry Battalion, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, and the Nisei Military Intelligence Service were recognized, along with a man credited for saving many of their lives. House Advances Unemployment Benefits for Military Spouses

A bill aimed at providing more support to military families who are transferred out of state passed unanimously out of the House of Representatives this morning. Democratic Representative Lynn Hemingway, sponsor of HB 263, says it provides unemployment benefits for military spouses who are forced to quit their jobs when their husband or wife is re-located.

Proposal Would Exempt Active Duty Service Members from Property Taxes

A proposal to exempt military personnel from paying state property taxes while on active duty got broad support in a House committee Monday. House Joint Resolution 12 is sponsored by Republican Representative Stephen Sandstrom, who says the legislature should do more than simply honor servicemen and women for a day.
