Lawmakers Approve Reimbursement Hike for County Jails

This week, state lawmakers in the House of Representatives passed a series of bills aimed at taking over public lands from the federal government, which currently controls roughly two-thirds of the entire state. But a top federal official who oversees those public lands doesn’t think their efforts will amount to a hill of beans.
With less than a week left in the session, House and Senate leaders are closing in on an agreement to fund the states $12.9 billion dollar budget. As KCPW’s Whittney Evans reports, they’re stuck on a few key funding items, but are finding more money for education and state employee salaries.
Despite concerns from affordable housing groups over a plan to split Utah’s Department of Community and Culture, that bill is one step closer to becoming law. Thursday, the Senate approved HB 139, which would move the Division of Housing and Community Development to a new department later this year. KCPW’s Jessica Gail reports on why lawmakers say the plan is a good idea.
The Utah Senate approved a bill this morning to keep online gambling illegal in the state as the federal government moves to allow it.
