GOP Delegates Pass Measure to Repeal Guest Worker Program

Republican delegates approved a resolution to repeal and replace Utah’s guest worker program on Saturday at the Utah Republican Party Convention. HB 116 was signed into law following the 2011 Legislative session, and is set to take effect in 2013. But as KCPW’s Whittney Evans reports, delegates say this weekend’s vote sends a clear message to the legislature that heads will roll for those who don’t want to repeal it.

State Party Chair Faces Challengers at GOP Convention Saturday

Utah Republican Party Chairman Thomas Wright will face two challengers during the state GOP Convention on Saturday, and they’re both calling on the party to preserve the power of delegates. Arnold Gaunt says he wants to bring back the grassroots nature of the party, and he worries the incumbent has strayed from the party constitution. He says the 2012 convention is at the forefront of delegates’ minds as they elect the party chair.

Dental Access for Kids Could be Burdened by Medicaid Reforms

Many Utah kids who are on Medicaid aren’t receiving the most basic dental care, even though it’s a federal requirement. Utah dentists say they aren’t reimbursed adequately for services and in many cases have to turn away patients. Lawmakers Consider Protecting Voter Registration Emails

County clerks are asking the legislature to allow them to hold on to voter email addresses, but keep them private, in an effort to have more online correspondence and cut down on the cost of mailing and postage. Many voters won’t list an e-mail address, because like physical addresses and phone numbers, they are currently made public.

Utah Delegation Tries to Block New Monuments

Republicans in Utah’s Congressional delegation are sponsoring legislation to prevent the president from designating any new national monuments in the state. This week, Congressman Rob Bishop introduced the Utah Lands Sovereignty Act, co-sponsored by Congressman Jason Chaffetz, with a companion Senate bill from Senators Mike Lee and Orrin Hatch.

Too Few Kids Particating in Summer Meal Programs, Study Shows

Hunger doesn’t take a vacation, says a new report, and many low-income kids in the state know that too well as school lunch programs end and summer begins. According to an annual report from the Food Research and Action Center, only 16 percent of Utah children who participate in a school lunch program participated in the summer program last year. Gina Cornia, Executive Director of Utahns Against Hunger, says that number is actually up slightly from the previous year, but too few low-income kids are benefiting from summer meals.

ITT to Expand Operations in Salt Lake County, Create Jobs

Manufacturing giant ITT will expand its operations in Utah, creating thousands of jobs in the state over the next 15 years. As KCPW’s Whittney Evans reports, Governor Gary Herbert joined the Governor’s Office of Economic Development yesterday to announce the expansion, made possible in part because of a multi-million dollar incentive.
