County Launching Mobile Teams for Mental Health Crises

Hoping to keep residents with mental health problems out of emergency rooms or jail whenever possible, Salt Lake County has launched three new Mobile Crisis Outreach Teams. As Mayor Peter Corroon explains, the teams will be deployed starting this Thursday to deal with problems whenever and wherever they arise. He noted as a property manager, he once had an elderly tenant who got off her medication and attacked police with a pair of clippers.

Advocates Oppose Exemptions to Utah Indoor Clean Air Act

Legislation that bans huka smoking and the use of electronic cigarettes in public spaces under the Utah Indoor Clean Air Act is on the verge of becoming law. But there’s one part of House Bill 245 that causes deep concern for some advocates, because it would exempt some existing businesses that specialize in those products, like huka bars and e-cigarette shops.

Tanning Restrictions Close to Becoming Law

A bill restricting the use of tanning beds by minors will soon be on Governor Gary Herbert’s desk, after the Utah House of Representatives approved it this morning following a passionate discussion. Fifth Substitute Senate Bill 41 would require those under 18 years old to have a parent with them to give consent every time they tan, or a written order from a physician.

Committee Votes to Extend Abortion Wait Time

A bill seeking to triple the length of Utah’s mandatory abortion waiting period is one step closer becoming law. Friday, the House Health and Human Services Committee approved the measure, saying the extra time could only help women in making their decision. But as KCPW’s Jessica Gail reports, plenty of people spoke out against it, saying it violates the landmark Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade.

Huka Ban Passes Utah House Committee

Electronic cigarettes and hookah pipes would be banned in public establishments, if a bill that amends the Utah Indoor Clean Air Act becomes law. The legislation cleared the House Government Operations Committee Thursday.
