State Wants Firestarters to Cover Cost of Suppression

Anyone responsible for starting a wildfire could soon have to foot the bill for the cost of putting out the fire under a bill being considered by Utah lawmakers.

(KCPW News)  Anyone responsible for starting a wildfire could soon have to foot the bill for the cost of putting out the fire under a bill being considered by Utah lawmakers.  Utah Division Director of Forestry, Fire, and State Lands Dick Buehler says many forest fires are human caused.

“I can tell you that last year 40 percent of the fires caused in the state of Utah were the result of human caused fires, primarily from shooting, or welding or grinding,” says Buehler.

Senate Bill 38 would make a person liable for suppression costs for any fire negligently, recklessly, or intentionally caused or spread.  The bill passed unanimously out of committee Tuesday and now heads to the Senate floor.
