House Approves Creation of MLK License Plate

Utah’s House of Representatives approved a bill today that creates a special license plate to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and uses the proceeds to fund the creation or support of civil rights awareness and education programs.

(KCPW News)  Utah’s House of Representatives approved a bill today that creates a special license plate to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and uses the proceeds to fund the creation or support of civil rights awareness and education programs.  However, the bill was amended at the request of one of King’s relatives to ensure proceeds would not be used to fund abortion or “harmful women’s reproductive rights.”  Republican Representative Brad Daw sponsored the amendment, and read from a letter sent by King’s niece, Dr. Alveda King.

“There are those today who believe that human rights include the right to take an unborn baby’s life and provide women’s reproductive rights that can prove harmful to women.  This is not just a perversion of language and logic, but a perversion of the principles for which my uncle and my family have stood,” wrote King.

Daw’s amendment changed the phrase human rights to inalienable rights to match the language of the Declaration of Independence.  House Bill 506 passed by a vote of 60 to 10 and now goes to the senate.
