(KCPW News) Freshman Utah Senator Mike Lee joined other Republicans on the Senate floor this morning, accusing Democrats of trying to influence the U.S. Supreme Court’s pending decision on the 2010 health care reform law. Lee called it “false” and “reckless” to suggest that striking down the law’s health insurance mandate would amount to judicial activism.
“I hope and I trust that moving forward, President Obama and my colleagues in this body will refrain from attempting to bully the Supreme Court, or seeking to misrepresent the court’s important work in fulfilling its constitutional duties. Let’s stop yelling at the referees,” he said.
But Utah Democratic Party Chairman Jim Dabakis accuses Senator Lee of yelling at the referees himself, saying he sees everything through an ideological viewpoint.
“The point is Senator Lee is doing the very thing he is saying shouldn’t be done. The reason he’s saying all this is to try to influence the court. The best position is to just say silent and let the court do its work,” he tells KCPW.
None of Utah’s Congressional delegation voted for the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The Supreme Court is expected to issue a ruling on its constitutionality this month.
