CityViews 9/10/12: “Half the Sky” /Mexico Then & Now

Segment 1:

Too many women around the world face forced prostitution, sex trafficking and gender-based violence. But a movement against the oppression of women and girls declares that the global community is finally ready to take the issue head on. On Monday, we’ll talk about the Half the Sky movement and ways women are fighting for – and winning – change.

Guests:

KUED Channel 7 will present a free sneak preview of the PBS special “Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide” followed by a panel discussion on Wednesday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. at the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art, 20 S. West Temple, Salt Lake City.

Panelists include: Nick Larsen, executive director and co-founder of Child Rescue Association of North America; Dr. Mara Rabin, medical director of Utah Health and Human Rights(UHHR); Felicia Maxfield-Barrett, executive director of the Utah Refugee Coalition (URC); Lindsay Gezinski, assistant professor at the University Of Utah College Of Social Work; and Jacque Baumer, a case manager for victims of human trafficking at Utah Health and Human Rights before becoming the executive programs director for the Child Rescue Association of North America.

The screening will feature 40 minutes of segments from the four-hour series. The entire series will air on KUED over two nights, October 1 and 2 from 9 to 11 p.m.

Segment 2:
A collection of iconic photographs of the Mexican Revolution has traveled the world and now is finally coming to Utah. On Monday, we’ll talk about the “Mexico Then & Now” exhibit and the importance of the revolution and its influence in art, literature and music, even today.

The exhibit “Mexico Then & Now” is showing through October 3 at the Salt Lake City Main Library, 210 E. 400 S., Salt Lake City.

The opening of The Night, photos from the Casasola Archive of LBGT individuals in Mexico during the Revolution to 1940, is Monday, Sept. 10 at 7 at the Utah Pride Center. A reception will follow, sponsored by Cabin Fever.
