John_de_GraafThe Hinckley Institute Radio Hour (Air date: Jan. 8, 2014) – John de Graaf is a filmmaker, activist, and co-author of Affluenza: The All-Consuming Epidemic (2001) and What’s the Economy For, Anyway?: Why It’s Time to Stop Chasing Growth and Start Pursuing Happiness (2011).  He also founded the organization Take Back Your Time, that examines the costs over-work on people and society, and advocates for time balance.  de Graaf has consulted officials in Bhutan to advocate a worldwide “New Development Paradigm,” grounded in Bhutan’s principles of “Gross National Happiness” – Bhutan’s alternative to Gross National Product (GDP) for the last 40 years.  de Graaf mentions UNICEF’s 2013 report, “Child Well Being in Rich Countries” in his talk.  This Hinckley Institute Radio Hour was recorded live with an audience of students and faculty, at the Hinckley Institute of Politics at the University of Utah, on November 14th, 2013.

The Hinckley Institute Radio Hour is a weekly program featuring forums on local, national, and international issues important to people living in Utah. The program airs every Wednesday at 10 AM and Saturday at 9 AM. Hosted by Anthony Scoma, the program highlights and contextualizes the forums presented by the Hinckley Institute of Politics every fall and spring semester at the University of Utah.
