The Hinckley Institute Radio Hour — This week on the program, a panel of experts discusses Utah’s real estate frenzy and its impact on rural Utahns.
Over the last year, 22 of Utah’s 29 counties experienced increases in housing prices. Salt Lake County, the state’s most urban and populous, sold 17,000 homes alone. While this is a slower market than 2020, real estate experts say that home appreciation will continue through 2022. But this growth is not just happening on the Wasatch Front and, across the state, rural communities are seeing rising home prices and strains on their infrastructure and water usage.
This week’s panel gets into the causes of these market forces, their impacts on Utah and some possible immediate and long-term solutions to housing scarcity. Included on the panel is Jim Wood, Ivory-Boyer senior fellow at the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute; Ben Riley, executive director of the Housing Authority of Southeastern Utah; and Pat Matheson, executive director of the Mountainlands Community Housing Trust. Moderating today’s discussion will be Morgan Lyon Cotti, associate director of the Hinckley Institute.
