Meritless, internet-based conspiracy theories have led to a huge uptick in threats against election workers around the nation. Last week, the Brennan Center at New York University Law School released the results of a survey of local election officials, which found that one in three felt unsafe because of the work they do, while one in six reported having been threatened.
Salt Lake County Clerk Sherrie Swensen says that while she has been on the receiving end of harassment and threats of violence, those threats aren’t behind her decision not to run for reelection this year. After more than three decades in her job, Swensen says the time has just come.
But, she says, the job has gotten more difficult because of the threats and also because of the political response to the baseless conspiracies.
