May 2012: The Devil Whale

KCPW’s Sounds From The Lounge features local and national bands playing in our member lounge at KCPW’s Library Square studios.

May 2012’s featured artist is The Devil Whale

“Anyone who has heard the music of Brinton Jones will agree that his songs are literature of the heart. Like a book bound by melody, harmony, and honesty, they unfold before you. Paragraphs become verses and chapters become choruses, leaving room for interpretation and relation. Brinton is as much an author as he is a songwriter.”

Salt Lake City’s The Devil Whale is the product of a collaboration between Jones and long-time friends Jake Fish (on bass) and Cameron Runyan (on drums) and Jamie Timm (on lead guitar).

Their second full-length, Teeth, is out now, and with the help of an EP (Young Wives, 2010) between their first full-length and this release, Teeth has a little more “bite” (pun intended) than their debut, Like Paraders (2008). The album plays host to a plethora of talented players, including friends from Seattle’s The Head And The Heart singing on the track “Magic Numbers.”

2011 has seen The Devil Whale play over 100 shows in 26 states, many of them headlining, a gracious amount of them alongside The Head & The Heart + Thao w/ the Get Down Stay Down and a lucky handful of them in the studios from Daytrotter to KEXP in Seattle.

The band is currently at home in Salt Lake City, taking a short break, playing a few shows, writing, recording and getting ready to do it all over again in 2012.
