Western States Forge Consensus on Immigration Reform at Summit

Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff says punitive illegal immigration measures than have taken effect in states like Arizona, Georgia and Alabama are knee-jerk, extreme reactions to a delicate and complicated issue. As KCPW’s Whittney Evans reports, Shurtleff told the first-ever Mountain West Immigration Summit he hosted today that states need to forge a consensus on comprehensive, humane and economically-sound immigration reform.

Two Utah Projects Highlighted in Federal Recreation, Conservation Initiative

Shurtleff Joins Push to Confirm Head of Financial Protection Bureau

Despite opposition from his own party, Republican Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff is pushing to have former Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray confirmed as director of the newly-created Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Shurtleff is one of 36 AGs from across the country that sent a letter to the U.S. Senate today backing President Obama’s nominee.

SL County to Offer Spanish Language Assistance at Polls

A federal mandate could potentially bring more Spanish-speaking Salt Lake County residents to the polls in 2012. The U.S. Census Bureau announced Wednesday a list of political jurisdictions across the nation that are now required to provide language assistance for non-English speaking voters based on new census data. As KCPW’s Whittney Evans reports, the change will put more pressure on the county, but likely garner more participation from Hispanic voters.

Conservation groups are slamming an attempt by Utah and Arizona lawmakers to overturn the Interior Department’s moratorium on new uranium mining claims near the Grand Canyon.
