Controversial Health Compact Moves Forward

Utah is a step closer to joining a multi-state compact that would petition the federal government for state control of healthcare dollars. As KCPW’s Whittney Evans reports, proponents of the bill say letting the state control Medicaid and Medicare spending is more efficient and potentially cost effective than the federal bureaucracy, but opponents say it’s biting off more than it can chew.

Tanning Restrictions Close to Becoming Law

A bill restricting the use of tanning beds by minors will soon be on Governor Gary Herbert’s desk, after the Utah House of Representatives approved it this morning following a passionate discussion. Fifth Substitute Senate Bill 41 would require those under 18 years old to have a parent with them to give consent every time they tan, or a written order from a physician.

Sex Ed Restrictions Bill Clears House

A bill that bans the discussion of contraception, homosexuality, premarital sex and the intricacies of intercourse in human sexuality curriculum for Utah public schools passed the Utah House of Representatives Wednesday. The bill’s sponsor, Republican Representative Bill Wright, says its best to respect the innocence of children and teach them “correct principles.”

Autism Pilot Program Advances out of Committee

State lawmakers and members of the public showed widespread support Friday for a proposed pilot program to fund behavioral therapy for young children with autism. The program, put forward by Republican Representative Ronda Menlove, would last two years and help families with children ages two through six years old. She says she tried to find a solution outside of an insurance mandate, which she says places unnecessary stress on small businesses.

Senate Approves Bill to Make State Pay for Health Insurance Mandates

A bill that requires the state to pay for health insurance mandates that lawmakers pass onto other public agencies cleared the Senate floor this morning. Republican Senator Todd Weiler’s plan would require those mandates to be applied to local school districts, charters schools and Utah’s colleges and universities, but the statewould pick up the tab. He says 14 such mandates have been proposed during this legislative session alone.
