Salt Lake City’s re-built North Temple viaduct is finally complete after nearly three years of construction. As KCPW’s Whittney Evans reports, Mayor Ralph Becker joined a celebrating crowd on 400 west this morning before trekking up the bridge and finally signaling traffic to pass through.
A vote at today’s Salt Lake County Council meeting could add momentum to an effort to put a convention center hotel in downtown Salt Lake City – or slow it down if it goes the other way. As KCPW’s Jessica Gail reports, council members on both sides of the aisle are skeptical about using taxpayer dollars to hire a consultant for the project.
The crown jewel of the ongoing Parley’s Trail expansion is coming to fruition. Construction crews are in the first stages of carving out a pedestrian tunnel under 1300 East, just south of 2100 South, that will join Sugar House Park with Hidden Hollow and the Sugar House business district. The Utah Transit Authority allowed reporters to ride along for a test run today of the new TRAX lines that will open this summer. The Mid-Jordan line starts out in South Jordan at Daybreak, connects to the main line at Fashion Place, and becomes the new University line. The West Valley line starts behind West Valley City Hall, connects at 2100 South and travels to Salt Lake Central Station.

The Salt Palace Convention Center is preparing for a 2.5-megawatt jolt from what’s being called the largest single rooftop solar system in the United States. The project, led by Salt Lake County, took off last September, but hit a speed bump when the county didn’t complete contracts in time to receive necessary federal tax credits. Darrin Casper, the county’s chief financial officer, says they were just late in the process, so they had to wait for the 2011 tax credits.
A $5 billion commercial and residential development in downtown Salt Lake City is in its final phase of construction. Several key players in the project gathered yesterday at the new Promontory Condominiums to talk about the rise of City Creek. And as KCPW’s Whittney Evans reports, they had differing ideas on the future of downtown.
