New Dem Party Chair Aims to Bring in LDS Support

Utah Democrats have a new party chairman. Saturday, Jim Dabakis was chosen by delegates at the Democratic state convention, held at the Hilton in downtown Salt Lake City. Dabakis, who co-founded the Utah Pride Center and Equality Utah, is now the first openly gay leader of a statewide political party in Utah, and says he hopes to be more welcoming to LDS Utahns.

Herbert, Barbour Call on Feds to Let States Reform Medicaid

Utah Senator Orrin Hatch convened a hearing of the Senate Finance Committee at the Utah Capitol Thursday, where the message he and others brought was loud and clear. Governor Gary Herbert joined him and Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour in declaring that the states could save Medicaid if the federal government would get out of the way. Hatch, the committee’s ranking Republican, plans to take their testimonies back to Washington as he continues to fight the Democrats’ health care reform law.

Study Sizes Up Salt Lake City’s “Clean Economy”

At more than 10,500, a new report from the Brookings Institution and Battelle says the Salt Lake City region ranks 50th out of 100 metropolitan areas for the number of clean jobs.
