ATTICA
On Sept. 9, 1971, over 1,200 inmates at the Attica correctional facility in Attica, NY, seized the yard at the maximum-security prison, took more than three dozen guards and civilian employees hostage, and demanded more humane treatment and better conditions. For five days, the world watched as TV news cameras covered the story from both outside and inside the prison, as journalists and a team of negotiators converged at the scene. But when law enforcement was ordered by New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller to retake Attica, the resulting massacre by state police left 29 inmates and 10 hostages dead — the deadliest violence Americans had inflicted on each other in a single day since the Civil War. Before the smoke from the tear gas cleared, police tortured inmates behind the walls. No charges were ever brought against authorities for the killings of inmates and guards. It was the largest prison rebellion in U.S. history.
Now, on the 50th anniversary of the Attica uprising, Emmy-winning director Stanley Nelson and producer and co-director Traci A. Curry examine one of the most shocking incidents in the nation’s history in the extraordinary, in-depth documentary Attica.

Conceived as a reimagining of director D.W. Griffith’s infamously racist 1915 silent film The Birth of a Nation, DJ Spooky’s Rebirth of a Nation is a controversial and culturally significant project that examines how “…exploitation and political corruption still haunt the world to this day, but in radically different forms.” Originally commissioned in 2004 by the Lincoln Center Festival, the work has played throughout the world and continues to engage audiences in themes of civil rights and freedom, seen through the lens of DJ Spooky’s unique art of remixing.

DIONNE WARWICK: DON’T MAKE ME OVER
Dionne Warwick is a living legend. With that singular voice, both delicate and impassioned, her interpretations of many Burt Bacharach–Hal David compositions — “Walk On By,” “Anyone Who Had a Heart,” “Do You Know the Way to San Jose” — are regarded as definitive. Her activist work for the Black and LGBTQ communities has had a profound impact, yielding her 1985 version of “That’s What Friends Are For,” sung with Gladys Knight, Stevie Wonder, and Elton John, which raised over $3 million for AIDS research. Warwick’s life and work, encompassing the Black American experience over the past six decades, is the subject of Dave Wooley and David Heilbroner’s inspiring documentary portrait.

Creative Writing: Creating Compelling Plots @ SLCC Community Writing Center
Feb 15 @ 6:00 pm – Feb 22 @ 7:30 pm

2-part workshop
Tuesdays February 15 & 22, 6 pm-7:30 pm
One of the most challenging aspects of any prose, fiction or non-fiction, is putting a compelling plot together. Unfortunately, plots are not one size fits all. Different types of stories require different elements of plot. Some, like mysteries, need a tight plot line full of twists, while more experimental writing, like collage, may let the reader fill the plot in themselves. Join us as we look at how plots work in different stories, and how to find the right plot for your own writing.
Cost: $30. Registration is required.

About the Instructor: “To be able to hold something you created in a program is just amazing!” says Zach Hagen of Imagine That 3D. Zach has been doing 3D Printing for about 10 years, starting by building his own 3d printer out of wood and zip – it may not have worked well but was very cool at the time. He has been designing in three dimensions since high school and majored in Architecture sustainable design and mechanical design in college. To fulfill his final requirements, creating a physical model of an architectural design, he decided to try 3D Printing for the first time… it blew his mind and he has been printing ever since.

Blooming Euphoria @ Urban Arts Gallery
Mar 1 @ 12:00 pm – Apr 3 @ 9:00 pm

“You are an aperture through which the universe is looking at and exploring itself.” -Alan Watts
Psychedelic art developed in the 1960’s and 70’s as a result of the psycadel-led counterculture movement against civil unrest. This developed in tandem with the “hippy” movement, which focused on sexual freedom, feminism and new ideas about spirituality. Additional influence arose from the 1969 Woodstock music festival and the subsequent musical movement that resulted in thousands moving to San Francisco for the “hippy” counterculture. The style of Psychedelic art stems from the earlier Art Nouveau movement with intense colors and flowing forms. Emerging from these historical contexts, “Blooming Euphoria” features a new wave of Psychedelic and abstract art from contemporary Utah artists.
This show features work by Scott Tuckfield, Emma Goldgar, Paige Bedwell, Chase Henson, Stephanie Bain, Isabella Ronda, and many more.
“Blooming Euphoria” hangs from March 1st to April 3rd, with a gallery stroll on March 18th, from 6-9pm. Admission is free and open to the public.

Beans
Tuesday, March 8th, 7pm, Free
From July to September 1990, two Mohawk communities in Quebec were thrust into a resistance against the Sûreté du Québec, the RCMP, and the Canadian Armed Forces. Referred to in the media as the “Oka Crisis,” the three-month standoff captured the attention of the entire country as the communities protested the expansion of a golf course into a forest and burial ground.
Set in the summer of 1990, the film tells the story of a 12-year-old Mohawk girl named Beans who skillfully navigates the nuances of friction between Indigenous identity and white settler culture to deliver a compelling, important message on self-identity in a broad societal context. It is a powerful coming-of-age drama from behind the protest lines. With its sensitive portrayal of internal and community conflicts gleaned from lived experience, it is poised to blaze a new trail for the next generation of Indigenous filmmakers.
