Politics Up Close: Automatic License Plate Readers/Congressional Candidate Donna McAleer


Today on the show, we looked at automatic license plate scanners with the ACLU of Utah and Salt Lake County Sheriff Jim Winder, talked about public lands policy with Black Diamond Equipment CEO Peter Metcalf, and chatted with Donna McAleer, the Democratic nominee in Utah’s 1st Congressional District this election year.

(KCPW News) It’s not likely you would know about it, but there’s a good chance your license plate have been scanned by the police in Utah. A recent request by the Drug Enforcement Administration to scan license plates on I-15 brought the issue into the limelight. Now the ACLU of Utah is raising privacy concerns and wants to know how the technology is being used. We talked with ACLU of Utah Legal Director John Mejia and took a call from Salt Lake County Sheriff Jim Winder.

Then with the Outdoor Retailer summer market in town, we sat down with Peter Metcalf, CEO of Black Diamond Equipment, to discuss his criticism of Governor Gary Herbert’s environmental and public lands policy.

Finally, we talked with Donna McAleer, the Army veteran and businesswoman who’s the Democratic nominee to challenge Republican Congressman Rob Bishop in this year’s election.
