Swallow Wins Race to Replace Outgoing Shurtleff

Election results show Republican John Swallow as Utah’s next Attorney General, defeating Democrat Dee W. Smith by 34 percent.

(KCPW News)  Election results show Republican John Swallow as Utah’s next Attorney General, defeating Democrat Dee W. Smith by 34 percent. Swallow has been the chief deputy under current Attorney General Mark Shurtleff for three years and says he has a number of priorities moving forward, starting with protecting Utah’s children.

“One is to keep our kids safe, and to do a lot more on education on how kids can be Internet smart, and how parents can keep their kids safe from Internet predators, which is really going to be a big focus for me,” said Swallow.

Swallow says once he takes office, a top priority is accessing the state’s public lands and natural resources to fund education.

“I’m also going to work a lot on public lands issues, making sure we have good access to our natural resources, creating jobs and revenues for education. So we aren’t dead last anymore for per pupil expenditures in education. I think that’s a big part of my job moving forward,” said Swallow.

Swallow will replace Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff, who has been in office since 2001, and will be sworn into office January 7, 2013.
