(KCPW News) Republican Candidate Mia Love is gaining ground on Democrat Jim Matheson in the final hours of the count for Utah’s 4th Congressional District. Counties must finalize their vote numbers today, and Utah County Clerk Bryan Thompson says things are going well for Love there.
“The Election Day results showed about 7 out of every 10 votes out of Utah County were going to Mia Love for those who reside in the 4th Congressional District. And what the last of the absentee and provisional that have come in, we are seeing that trend continue. Since election day she has picked up around 1,100 to 1,200 votes or so,”he says.
Thompson says there are very few votes left to count in Utah County; however the latest count narrows Matheson’s lead to 1,453 votes compared to his earlier lead of just over 2,600.
Juab County’s final count of absentee and provisional ballots favored Love by a count of 27 to 24. Sanpete County has yet to release its final count. Matheson’s campaign says Utah County’s count is no surprise and expects his lead will widen once the Salt Lake County results are released. The Salt Lake Board of Canvass meets at 4 p.m. today.
