Behind the Headlines

Utah’s coronavirus surge, ongoing protests over a police shooting, and the Utah governor’s race

Play

Positive cases of the coronavirus continue to surge in Utah as officials grapple with a response. And science is clear: face coverings help prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Why were health leaders wishy-washy about recommending them at first?

For the past week, protesters have been at the Salt Lake County district attorney’s office every evening to protest the death of Bernardo Palacios-Carbajal, and pledge to do so until a report is released.

And Utah’s four Republican candidates for governor have together spent more than $6.5 million, and most of them have powered their campaigns with whopping cash infusions from political allies, special interests and their personal or family fortunes. A look inside who is funding them.

At 9 a.m. on Friday, Salt Lake Tribune reporters Andy Larsen, Jessica Miller and Bethany Rodgers, and news columnist Robert Gehrke join KCPW’s Roger McDonough to talk about the week’s top stories. Every Friday at 9 a.m., stream “Behind the Headlines” at kcpw.org, or tune in to KCPW 88.3 FM or Utah Public Radio for the broadcast. Join the live conversation by calling (801) 355-TALK.
