New report on Lauren McCluskey evidence photos, protester charges called ‘excessive,’ Tribune editor resigns

Days before student-athlete Lauren McCluskey was killed, aUniversity of Utah police officer showed off explicit photos that McCluskey had taken of herself to at least three of his male co-workers without a work-related reason, according to a monthslong investigation from the Utah Department of Public Safety. The state’s final report reinforces and expands on The Tribune’s reporting, concluding the images were displayed inappropriately at the end of a staff briefing in October 2018 by the same officer who was supposed to be investigating McCluskey’s concerns of exploitation by a man she had dated.

Salt Lake County Sim Gill faces accusations that he filed excessive charges and questions about charging protesters with criminal mischief and rioting, charges that include a gang enhancement and could carry a sentence of up to life in prison. Protesters in July painted the street red, and some smashed windows at the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office.

And Salt Lake Tribune Executive Editor Jennifer Napier-Pearce has resigned. The veteran journalist and former public-radio reporter has led Utah’s largest daily newspaper since August 2016. She sent her letter of resignation Monday, citing differences with the newspaper’s board chairman and chief philanthropic patron Paul Huntsman.
