SLC Reaches for Goal of Zero Waste

Salt Lake City is taking its sustainability efforts a step further with a proposed “Zero Waste” resolution before the city council. It calls for residents to use city programs that are already in place and promote sustainable use of resources in order to reduce or divert waste by recycling. Recycling Program Manager Debbie Lyons says right now, the city is recycling or composting about 33 percent of residential waste, which has increased thanks to curbside recycling and the yard waste program.

“Occupy the Fed” Protesters Move to Gallivan Center

Occupy Wall Street Protestors who camped out on an empty, private lot on State Street in downtown Salt Lake City are moving to the Gallivan Center, the Salt Lake Tribune reports, after the city offered up the space. Management of the property had voiced concerns over the occupation. About 25 protestors were on the space on 147 South, where Justin Kramer previously told KCPW that many planned to stay until they were physically removed.

Cab Company Sues City Over Airport Bid System

Local taxi companies are fighting to be able to continue to pick up passengers at Salt Lake City International Airport. Yellow Cab owner Don Barron is against a new policy passed in 2010 by the city council that requires a taxi company to win a contract in order to work there. Barron notes that local companies like his put in bids, but lost to out-of-state providers.
