Missing Police Firearm Is Returned

A Salt Lake City Police officer’s missing gun has been found. After a training exercise yesterday, an officer left the gun on the trunk of his car before driving off. An extensive search of the area where the officer was parked was unsuccessful. However, Chief Chris Burbank says there is a good explanation for that.

There’s no question the economy is doing better for Utah cities and towns than it was at the height of the recession. But we’re still not out of the woods yet. Right now, the Salt Lake City Council is debating how to balance the capital city’s budget. Mayor Ralph Becker again has proposed no new property taxes, but it could mean property owners need to be on the lookout for new fees.

The Decemberists, Bright Eyes Part of 2011 Twilight Concert Series

Downtown Salt Lake City will start filling up on Thursday nights this summer as the 2011 Twilight Concert Series returns to Pioneer Park for a second time. Ten artists have been announced for seven dates throughout the summer. Concert Director Casey Jarman announced the concert line up yesterday, and said the first show will be July 14th.

After months of discontent in the Salt Lake City Library system, the Library Board took steps yesterday to begin making its meetings more transparent, hoping to begin involving the public more in what’s going on. Library Director Beth Elder says she wants to make sure proceedings going on inside the library are easily accessible to everyone who wants to view them.

Downtown West Valley City will be getting a major facelift over the next several years. Local leaders broke ground today Thursday on Fairbourne Station, an urban redevelopment project that will create a downtown for the city. Fence Around Liberty Park Pond Comes Down

For the first time in nearly a year, Salt Lake City residents have a clear view of the Liberty Park pond. The eight-foot fences that have surrounded the pond for nearly a year since the Red Butte oil spill were taken down yesterday, much to the surprise and enjoyment of park visitors like Meredith Baker.

Salt Lake to “Celebrate the City” at Liberty Park

Last June, when more than 30,000 gallons of crude oil spilled into Red Butte Creek and Liberty Park pond during the Red Butte Oil spill, Marilee Latta, who has run the park concessions, rides and boat rentals for nearly three decades, says business was nearly non-existent. But this year, she expects that to change, as the city prepares a celebration to re-open the pond within a few weeks.
