Salt Lake City Councilman Running for Congress

Salt Lake City Council Chair Soren Simonsen is setting his sights on higher office, filing to run as a Democrat against Republican Congressman Jason Chaffetz in District 3. Utah Ranked 36th for Integrity in Government

A new report card ranks Utah 36th among states for integrity in government. As KCPW’s Whittney Evans reports, the Center for Public Integrity, Global Integrity and Public Radio International collaborated on the State Integrity Investigation, which shows Utah has room for improvement in political financing and legislative accountability, but does a good job of keeping state agencies in check.

Lawmakers React To Abstinence-Only Bill Veto

Sex education, including discussion of contraception, will continue in Utah schools. Friday night, Governor Gary Herbert vetoed House Bill 363, which would have required schools teach abstinence-only or nothing at all. Senate President Michael Waddoups believes it was a good piece of legislation, and a special session to overturn the veto could be in the cards.

SLC Residents Attend Pipeline Safety Conference

Salt Lake City residents got the chance to follow up on what has happened since the 2010 Chevron oil spill that sent more than 30,000 gallons of crude oil flowing into Salt Lake City waterways. On Friday, the city hosted a pipeline safety conference at The Leonardo, where representatives from local and federal government, the pipeline industry and regulators discussed operations, regulations, prevention, safety preparedness and initiatives.
