Equality Utah Releases 2012 Endorsements, Some Stay Private

Equality Utah has released its list of endorsed candidates for statewide office, Congress, the legislature and local races based on their views on LGBT issues and their viability as candidates. Executive Director Brandie Balken says the organization sent out surveys after the parties held their political conventions, adding that more candidates continue to participate in their endorsement process.

Division of Air Quality Holds Meetings on Draft Pollution Rules

The Utah Division of Air Quality is looking for businesses and the public to weigh in on how to develop new rules to help Utah come into compliance with federal standards for particulate pollution, or PM 2.5, which is prevalent in the winter. Director Bryce Bird says several sectors, ranging from bakeries to auto body shops, must reduce their emissions.

Storm Helping Subdue Alpine Wildfire

Crews fighting the Quail Fire near Alpine received some assistance from Mother Nature today in the form of some much needed rain. Loyal Clark, a spokesperson for the US Forest Service, says while the rain hasnā€™t extinguished the fire, it has been helpful.

Quail Fire Burns 2,000 Acres

The Quail Fire burning in Alpine has scorched just under 2,000 acres as of Wednesday evening and is 5 percent contained, according to the Bureau of Land Managementā€™s Cami Lee. She says itā€™s not yet clear when the fire will be fully under control.

Becker Not Disappointed USOC Won’t Bid for 2022 Winter OIympic Games

Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker says heā€™s not disappointed the U.S. Olympic Committee wonā€™t submit a bid for the 2022 Winter Games, even though Utah was considering one. He says it gives the stateā€™s exploratory committee time to get its work done well for a potential 2026 bid, adding itā€™s a good thing the U.S.O.C. announced its decision now.
