Social justice and human rights are among the important issues for Angela Romero. The Democratic hopeful for the Utah House of Representatives defeated an incumbent state lawmaker, Brian Doughty, at the Salt Lake County Democratic Party Convention to capture the nomination for House District 26. Now, she’s running to represent the city’s west side neighborhood of Glendale, along with 9th and 9th, parts of downtown and West Valley City.

Traffic Fatalities Up in 2012

As Utahns hit the road for the Memorial Day weekend, the Utah Department of Transportation is alarmed about the number of traffic fatalities. 75 people have died on Utah roads this year, up from 72 at the end of May 2011. Hatch, Lee Oppose U.N. L aw of Sea Convention

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the military’s support of the United Nations Convention on the Law of The Sea discussed today by the U.S. Senate isn’t enough to sway Republican Utah Senator Mike Lee. In an exchange with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Lee questioned who would have the authority to regulate the mining royalties collected under the treaty.

Utah Delegation Backs Keystone XL Pipeline Motion

Utah Congressmen Jim Matheson and Jason Chaffetz were among House lawmakers voting this morning in favor of a motion to move the controversial Keystone XL tar sands pipeline forward as part of a transportation bill. Speaking on the house floor last night, Matheson said contrary to what many believe, this product is already being transported to the United States.

While longtime Republican Utah Senator Orrin Hatch will fight to keep his party’s nomination on June 26, former Senator Bob Bennett didn’t have the luxury of being in a primary election in 2010, when his bid for a fourth term in office fell right at the state GOP convention. Hatch, who is facing former State Senator Dan Liljenquist, seems to have the upper hand going into the primary. KCPW’s Jeff Robinson asked Senator Bennett, his former colleague in Washington for 18 years, whether Hatch’s re-election to a seventh term in office is assured as this point.
