Community Calendar

Our Community Calendar is a volunteer-run resource offered to all qualified nonprofits. Community Calendar events are highlighted live, on-air throughout the day on KCPW. Featured events are chosen at random. You will also find all current Community Calendar events listed here at kcpw.org.

The Community Calendar also has a physical home. Following the criteria listed below, mail or bring professional materials (no handwritten signs please) promoting your event to the KCPW studios at 210 East 400 South, Suite 10, Salt Lake City, UT 84111. We’ll happily hang them in our window for all Library Square traffic to see.

To submit an event to the Community Calendar, the event must meet the following criteria:

  • The event must take place in Utah.
  • The organization promoting the event  must be a qualified 501(c)(3) charity or political subdivision.
  • The event cannot promote a religious organization or individual.

If your event meets these criteria, click “Post Your Event” below. Include your contact information in case we have any questions. Otherwise, your event may not get published.

We encourage you to make the most of your post by adding a featured image and links to your organization.  Utilize the provided field boxes (i.e. location, ticket information) to display information as accurately and quickly as possible.

Please do not submit duplicate postings for the same event. If you are posting a class or workshop that requires registration, list just the first instance in the date and time, and include the details for subsequent classes in the description.

NOTE:  approved events are typically posted to the Community Calendar within seven days of your submission.

Please submit requests at least 14 days before your event – listings read on-air are chosen at random, the week of the event.

Description
As long as we’re growing and eating fruits and veggies, we’re creating lots of kitchen scraps and plant debris that has to be dealt with. Why toss that material into our green waste bins when we can compost it instead? Compost is a super affordable (mostly free) and incredibly useful soil amendment, adding organic matter and increasing the biological activity in our soil. It also helps to retain moisture if used as a top dressing (mulch) and improves soil structure and drainage.
This workshop will help you understand the science behind great compost and the ingredients needed to make a healthy, productive compost pile. Topics will include building, watering, turning, and troubleshooting your compost pile as well as a review of different composting methods so that you can build a pile that matches your lifestyle, space, and gardening needs. We have several different types of tumbling composters on-site for you to check out, too.
Now’s your chance to come learn the basics of making your own “black gold” at home and maybe share some of your own successes or challenges you’ve faced composting in the past. Each student will get to handle, smell, sift, and compare some amazing “finished compost” from the instructor’s home garden.
Please come dressed for being outside and for working in the garden, and feel free to bring garden gloves if you have a favorite pair. Please come prepared with sunscreen, water bottle, and don’t forget your mask 🙂
This workshop has a limited number of spots available and is expected to sell out quickly. No walk-ins permitted the day of class, so please register on line ahead of time.
If rain is expected we will cancel THE DAY BEFORE the event via EMAIL, so please check your email inbox (and SPAM folder) if the weather looks iffy!
Instructors: Marybeth Janerich and Katie Sue Mulliken
This workshop is $25.
Discounted rates available to community gardeners with WCG or the WCG Network.
Pre-Registration is required.
NOTE: We offer a limited number of reduced-tuition scholarships for low-income individuals. If you would like to apply, please fill out and submit our scholarship application before continuing the on-line registration process.

Vermicomposting with Red Wigglers @ Wasatch Community Gardens
Jun 4 @ 2:30 pm – 4:30 pm

Would you like to make your own compost but don’t have the outdoor space? Are you tired of not putting your kitchen scraps to good use? Do you already compost but want to do more to create fertile garden soil? If so, come join us in our Teaching Gardens to learn how to make compost indoors year-round using red wiggler worms. After going over some basics, we’ll meet some “red wigglers” up close. We’ll practice sorting worms from their castings, so plan to get dirty during this part of the workshop!
We’ll also practice making some fresh bedding for our red wigglers. Students will get to examine several different kinds of worm bins and will receive a take-home list of resources, including a parts list for the DIY bin that we will show in class.
Please come dressed for being outside and for sorting worms (a messy business!). Garden gloves are NOT recommended for this very delicate process. Students not wanting to sort the worms with their bare hands or touch the castings are absolutely welcome to simply observe. Please do come to class prepared with sunscreen, a water bottle, a sun hat, etc., and don’t forget your mask 🙂
This workshop has a limited number of spots available. No walk-ins permitted the day of class, so please register online ahead of time. Class will be held rain or shine. In case of rain, we will hold class on our covered patio.

CAN YOU DIG THIS?
Friday, June 17 @ 8:00 PM
In Person @ Liberty Park
When one thinks of South Los Angeles, what comes to mind is gangs, drugs, liquor stores, abandoned buildings and vacant lots. The last thing that you would expect to find is a beautiful garden sprouting up through the concrete, coloring the urban landscape. As part of an urban gardening movement taking root in South LA, people are planting to transform their neighborhoods and are changing their own lives in the process. Calling for people to put down their guns and pick up their shovels, these “gangster gardeners” are creating an oasis in the middle of one of the most notoriously dangerous places in America.

TROUBLEMAKERS: THE STORY OF LAND ART
Friday, June 24 @ 8:00 PM
In Person @ Liberty Park
Troublemakers unearths the history of land art in the tumultuous late 1960s and early 1970s. The film features a cadre of renegade New York artists that sought to transcend the limitations of painting and sculpture by producing earthworks on a monumental scale in the desolate desert spaces of the American southwest. Today these works remain impressive not only for the sheer audacity of their makers but also for their out-sized ambitions to break free from traditional norms. As the film makes clear, in making works that can never be possessed as an object in a gallery, these troublemakers stand in marked contrast to the hyper-speculative contemporary art world of today.

SUMMER OF SOUL (… OR WHEN THE REVOLUTION COULD NOT BE TELEVISED)
Friday, July 29 @ 8:00 PM
In Person | Liberty Park
A documentary about the legendary 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival which celebrated African-American music and culture and promoted Black pride and unity. In his acclaimed debut as a filmmaker, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson presents a powerful and transporting documentary—part music film, part historical record created around an epic event that celebrated Black history, culture and fashion. Filmed over the course of six weeks in the summer of 1969, just one hundred miles south of Woodstock, the footage was largely forgotten–until now. Summer of Soul shines a light on the importance of history to our spiritual well-being and stands as a testament to the healing power of music during times of unrest, both past and present.
