(KCPW News) Republican Spencer Cox became the State of Utah’s 18th governor on Monday during a sweeping ceremony at the Tuacahn Center For the Arts in Ivins, Utah.
During his inaugural address, Cox said that America “is facing a crisis of empathy; a scourge of contempt.”
“Very little feels ‘United’ about the United States today,” Cox said.

The newly-sworn in governor also decried a crisis of truth and understanding. “[A]t time when we have more knowledge at our fingertips than any generation in history, we have somehow become more susceptible to disinformation, conspiracy theories and lies as too often we all struggle to find accurate sources of truth and unbiased information.”
Two days after his inauguration, the divisions in the country, and the gap between truth and conspiracy were on full display as a mob loyal to President Donald Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol while a joint session of Congress met to accept Electoral College votes certifying President-elect Joe Biden’s victory.
On Thursday, KCPW’s Roger McDonough sat down with the new governor and asked him to reflect on the prior day’s events, and to discuss Utah’s response to the still-raging pandemic.
