Utah Democrats Sound Alarm on Education

(KCPW News) Democrats held a press conference at the Capitol on Tuesday decrying the state of education in Utah. The executive committee of the party in Utah released what it said was a call for urgent action in a report titled “Utah’s Faltering Education System.”  Roger McDonough reports.

Senate Bill Would Increase Medical Student Levels at University of Utah

(KCPW News) The Utah Senate Education Committee unanimously endorsed a bill that would allocate 10 million dollars of annual funding to the University of Utah School of Medicine, and make it possible for the school to accept 40 additional medical students every year. CPR Certification Could Become Mandatory for High Schoolers

(KCPW News) The Utah legislature will be discussing adding a new graduation requirement for Utah high school students during the upcoming session. Democratic Representative Carol Spackman Moss of Holladay is introducing a bill that will make CPR certification a requirement for all high school graduates.

Utah Ranks Last in School Breakfast Participation

Utah is in last place when it comes to the number eligible school children eating free and reduced price breakfast each day. A report released Tuesday by the Food Research Action Center shows only one in three students who receive free or reduced price lunch are also eating breakfast, which is included in the program. Gina Corina, Exeutive Director of Utahn’s Against Hunger says students who use the program must show up early to school, so she wants to explore some other options.

Lawmaker Wants to Boost Education Funding Through Liquor Sales

Liquor sales could begin funding public education, at least if one Utah lawmaker has his way. Republican Representative Jim Bird plans to run a bill in the upcoming legislative session that takes 10 percent of liquor sales to improve schools. KCPW’s Jessica Gail reports on reaction to his plan.

Utah’s High School Graduation Rates in Bottom Half of Country

New data released by the U.S. Department of Education shows Utah’s high school graduation rate sits in the bottom half of the country. In 2011 the Beehive State’s graduation rate was 76 percent; lower than 31 other states. State Associate Superintendent Judy Park says more needs to be done to improve graduation rates, but it’s hard to do without funding.

Utah’s Underage Drinking Rate Lowest in the Nation

A national survey shows Utah has the lowest number of underage drinkers in the country. The National Survey on Drug Use and Health shows just 14.3 percent of Utah teens surveyed reported using alcohol during the previous month, more than twelve percent below the national average.
