Salt Lake City to Consider Ban on E-Billboards

The Salt Lake City Planning Commission wants to ban electronic billboards in the city, as part of the city’s efforts to eventually eliminate billboards altogether. Right now there are six electronic billboards in Salt Lake City, three of which Planning Commission Chairman Michael Fife says the city contends are illegal, because they were erected during an electronic billboard moratorium that was implemented last fall. He says billboards are not something the city wants to promote.

Bars React to Discounted Drink Ban

A new law that bans discounted drink specials at bars and taverns is set to take effect July 1st. While “happy hours” are already banned in Utah, many businesses offer discounts on certain drinks at specific times. Michael Garcia, Assistant Manager at Murphy’s, says they’re going to have to re-work a lot of numbers, and it’s not going to be easy. Murphy’s had a monthly beer special that encouraged customers to come in. And now, Garcia isn’t sure they can sustain a permanent price reduction, or going back to full price.

Think Tank: Film Incentive is Bad Deal for Taxpayers

A proposal to increase the tax incentives and rebates given to film and TV producers that shoot in Utah won broad support in the House of Representatives. But a new study by a local conservative think tank says when the state gives out such incentives, it’s pretty much throwing taxpayer money down the drain.
