Politics Up Close: Senate Candidate Dan Liljenquist, County Council Hopeful Joe Demma

Former Republican State Senator Dan Liljenquist was counting on a strong showing in the GOP caucus meetings this spring to knock off six-term Senator Orrin Hatch this election year. But Hatch got his people out to support him, setting the challenger back a bit. Still, Liljenquist managed to secure enough votes to put Hatch in his first primary election since 1976.

Jensen Cleared of Violating Hatch Act

The federal government has ruled Salt Lake County Councilman and Unified Fire Authority Chief Michael Jensen has not violated the Hatch Act. The federal law prohibits government employees who oversee federal funds, or are paid with them, from engaging in partisan politics. Jensen says the ruling validates his belief that he’s done nothing wrong, but as KCPW’s Whittney Evans reports, Democrats who filed the complaint say they’re not satisfied.

Parks Bond Could Go On November Ballot

Salt Lake County is again seeking a bond for park improvements, as well as the construction of new parks in the west, southwest and southeast areas of the valley. The amount has increased from $110 million to $123 million, but the yearly payments would remain the same. Community Services Department Director Erin Litvack says if the county council moves forward with the proposal, it would go on the November ballot.

Survey Finds Caregivers Don’t Use SL County Services

A survey shows more than 70 percent of caregivers for the elderly in Salt Lake County are missing out on potentially valuable assistance from the county’s Division of Aging Services. The county’s Caregiver Support Program provides assistance for caregivers who are 18 and older, and caring for family members who are 60 or older.

While Salt Lake County Republicans will have to hold a primary election to pick their nominee for county mayor, Democratic delegates selected State Senator Ben McAdams as their nominee at convention on Saturday. McAdams narrowly crossed the 60 percent threshold needed to beat Senate Minority Leader Ross Romero in the second round of voting.
